Unrealized Realities: Farscape Cancellation
Wow! Has it really almost been a year since the cancellation of Farscape was announced in chat? Yep, come September 6, the anniversary of Farscape's cancellation come about. An event that has spawned something quite impressive when I look at it.
A year ago this time, I (like many other Scapers) were happily whiling away our time online with Farscape discussions, fanfic and other fannish things until the announcement came. Nearly overnight the Save Farscape campaign was launched and grew to include protests at SciFi Headquarters, advertisements, radio spots, and even a television commercial, garnering mention in several main stream media sources. Despite what some thought the campaign did not sputter and die after a few months. It's still going and quite strong at that.
And what a campaugn it has been. Crackers Don't Matter, A Fifth for Farscape, Aeryn Go-braless, the Guerilla Radio Network, and numerous other campaigns supporting the return of Farscape's fifth season. Even a Farscape campaign supporting the morale of troops by providing Farscape DVDs and books for entertainment.
It's mind boggling and humbling (some would say crazy) to see so many people devoted to such a fine show. I think this is because Farscape appeals to so many people or many different levels. It's quality televison in a time of mindless and repetative sitcoms, boring "un" reality tv, and biased, sensationalized "news" media. Is it any wonder with its excellent writing, acting, direction, and fx that this show appeals to so many who want a short time away from reality to enjoy a well done story?
Viva la Farscape!
